What are your initial thoughts about the concept of Literacy with ICT (LwICT)? There are a number of good aspects. Students should have exposurer to techology in a variety of contexts and subject areas so that they are aware of how techology applies in different fields. There should also be a comfort level with different aspects of technology. While many students may come with some technological know how they may not know how to apply this to accomplish specific defined tasks.
What implementation barriers for LwICT do you foresee at Senior Years? Content heavy curricula do not provide many opportuities to instruct the use of specialized technological devices and or software.
This is compounded if students arrive without specific skills or comfort with using technology or exploring with technology. As things continue to advance in grades k-8 this problem may be reduced.
Access to technology and specialized equipment comes at a significant cost - the more specialized the higher (generally)
Sharing of space is also an issue with multiple courses sharing time slots and requiring access time to computers and other equipment.
What opportunities does LwICT present for Senior Years? A very good opportunity to implement strategies of assessment as learning and assessment for learning. It also presents a possibility to rejuvenate learning opportunities in standard curricula and add emphasis to the higher level thinking of Bloom's
What professional learning is required initially to prepare Senior Years teachers to begin to use the LwICT continuum? An assessment of teacher abilities with the technology to be used would be important particularly with specialized devices. Teacher comfort level would need to be high for most to implement use. Some training with the affective domain part of the continuum and inservicing on the overall approach/rational would also improve the chances for successful "infusion".
What types of ICT do you currently have in your Senior Years classroom? A couple of computers. A SMARTboard. Graphing calculators. Some labprobes
What types of ICT are available to you in your school, but not in your classroom? Computer labs, digital cameras, video cameras, Senteos
What subjects and grades do you teach and how do you currently use ICT to enhance student learning? MAth 40S/30SPC Calculus and Advanced math. SMARTboard and graphing calculators are used for visual demonstrations. Spreadsheets for numerical patterns, probeware to collect data for curve fitting and analysis, modelling software for analysis. I have used wikis in the past for student discussion and I hope to add blog opportunities to post ad reflect on lesson topics in the future.
